Do you know what the healthiest country on earth is? According to the 2019 edition of the Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, Spain has recently become the healthiest country on the globe. This publication took into account several factors such as life expectancy, environmental factors, and health concerns such as tobacco risk and obesity. Now that Spain can boast that it is the healthiest country in the world, this leaves many wondering, whats the cause? Researchers point to the fact that diet is the cause for their flourishing population.


Spanish food features tapas – which are small dishes of foods. These foods can include anything from small plates of veggies, to meat and seafood. The word “tapas” is derived from the Spanish verb tapar, which means “to cover.” Beyond tapas, the Mediterranean diet is the basis of Spain’s food. This diet consists of extra virgin olive oil and nuts, whole grains, fresh seafood, and vegetables.  It places a strong emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. According to a fascinating study published just last year from The New England Journal of Medicine, participants who ate the Mediterranean diet had less chances of cardiac related events when compared to a low fat diet.

Scientists have spent years studying specific regions around the world where most of the citizens there live over the age of 100. These individuals have little to no cases of obesity, disease, or cases of prescription medication. These countries are called the Blue Zones, and they include areas such as Okinawa, Sardinia, Loma Linda. These countries demonstrate that healthy living, nutritional excellence, and stress reduction can extend the longevity of life.

America ranked number 35 on the list of 169 countries studied. This shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the American diet is rather toxic to the human body due to enormous portion sizes, high levels of simple carbohydrates, trans fats, and processed junk foods. Unfortunately, many Americans aren’t educated when it comes to proper nutrition including quality of quantity of food. Many believe they eat a healthy diet, but they are missing the vital nutrients and subsequently become malnourished. Although in recent years the United States has made giant leaps towards become a more health conscious country overall, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
